Salvatore Magazzini

French impressionist painters were Europe’s trendsetters in the mid-to-late 1800s. At that time in Italy, however, a number of artists in Florence gave birth to their own brand of impressionism in which figures remained solid and compact, instead of indefinite and hazy, like their French counterparts.

These “macchiaioli painters” took their name from a disparaging remark made by a critic at the time. Depending on the translation,, “macchiaioli” means either to spot or to stain. Many works produced during this period utilized a continuous contrast of colors throughout the work, placing special emphasis on mood and light. More than 100 years later, the style is clearly visible in the work of contemporary Italian painter Salvatore Magazzini.

The Macchiaioli movement is one of the most important artist movements in Italy towards the end of the 19th century. It was a little bit overlooked internationally, but there are artists in this movement who produced work that is comparable in quality to Monet or Cézanne. It’s the Italian version of the French impressionists.

This is a movement that influenced all Tuscanian painters of the 20th century. Even painters that are painting currently are still very influenced by the tones, by the color palate and by the subjects that these people used.

One of the most striking features of Magazzini’s landscapes is his use of the same colors in the land and sky. He starts with the landscape and then he adds the sky. It is earthy in colors, very warm, with reds and yellows and greens.

Salvatore started painting when he was 14 years old. He started as a lot of painters in Tuscany start. Before you are a painter, you are a craftsman, so you learn how to use different media. You learn how to use color. He doesn’t work outdoors, he works mainly in the studio. He works on images and souvenirs of places he has seen. He uses the colors to create an image of the landscape, but with a very impressionistic and almost abstract style.

Salvatore Magazzini was born in Pistoia, Italy in 1955.
